UPDATED: 5:14 pm MST September 4, 2009

Officials said in a release Friday that the Water Wheel Fire, which was discovered on Aug. 30 near Payson, Ariz., is now 100 percent contained.

Management of the fire transferred from the Arizona Central West Zone Incident Management Team to a local Type IV Incident Management Team from the Tonto National Forrest at 6 p.m. on Thursday.

The fire area remains closed to the public due to the presence of rolling debris, hazard trees in roadways and burned guard rails.

The following recreation sites also remain closed: Water Wheel, First Crossing, Second Crossing, Third Crossing and Cold Spring.

Public access in the area is restricted to the roadways and private property.

Houston Mesa Road between Beaver Valley and Whispering Pines remains closed. Whispering Pines is only accessible by the Control Road.

Officials are still investigating the cause of the blaze.

The fire caused evacuations of residents in the Whispering Pines and Beaver Valley communities and campers from the Water Wheel Campground on Sunday.

The Tonto National Forest is open for recreation activity and includes campsites and recreation sites throughout the forest and Salt River system lakes.

Tonto National Forest Deputy Fire Staff Officer Helen Graham issued a warning to vacationers visiting the park over the holiday weekend.

"With the ongoing drought we are experiencing in our forest and the high number of visitors we expect during this major holiday weekend coming up, we continue to emphasize practicing extreme caution in all fire practices, such as making campfires," she said. "Make sure that campfires are absolutely out before departing your area. Dead out."

For more information on recreation sites and fire closure restrictions, visitors can contact the Payson Ranger District at 928-474-7900, or check online.
