Accelerated Petition Drive Draws New Interest

The push is on to get rid of photo-enforcement cameras in Arizona.

Volunteers with camerafraud.com and Arizona Citizens Against Photo Radar stepped up their petition drive at the Arizona state fair Wednesday.

They are trying to get enough signatures to put a photo-enforcement ban on the November 2010 ballot.

"I think the people's voice would definitely have all of them shut down," said Christine Cameron of Phoenix. "I'd like like to see it on the ballot. Give us a choice."

The effort picked up steam after three U.S. cities in Ohio and Texas passed ballot measures on Tuesday to eliminate photo-enforcement cameras in their communities.

Shawn Dow heads up the Arizona effort. He said he is confident they will get the 153,000 signatures needed to put the issue to a vote.

"Photo radar has never survived a vote," said Dow. "It's been on the ballot 17 times in U.S. and every single time people voted to take the cameras down."

However, not everyone is in favor of turning Arizona's photo-enforcement cameras off.

"I think since they put them up, it's helped slow people down," said Thomas Johnson of Scottsdale.

According to the Department of Public Safety, over the first nine months of its photo-enforcement program, property damage collisions were down more than 17 percent, injury collisions sank 18 percent and fatalities slid more than 19 percent statewide. DPS attributes these statistics to the new cameras.

Yet despite the statistics, the anti-photo-enforcement camera movement continues to grow.

"We're getting about a thousand signatures a day since we started," said Dow.
