Drivers Not Following Light Rail Signs

POSTED: 10:43 pm MST March 2, 2009
UPDATED: 8:08 am MST March 3, 2009

The sign says "No Turn on Red," but CBS 5 News captured one driver after another breaking the traffic rules near the new light rail tracks.

Phoenix's light rail system arrived two months ago, and so far there have been 11 accidents said Metro Light Rail spokeswoman Hillary Foose. None have been deadly.

"It comes down to you versus a train in some cases," Foose said.

At the corner of 3rd and Washington streets, where two cars collided with the light rail, cars continued to turn on a red arrow.

"He's sitting on the tracks," said Foose. "He should be waiting for a green light."

Another woman crossed on the red, saying she was trying to catch her bus.

"I know, I won't make the same mistake again," she said.

Drivers said they realized the shouldn't turn on the red light.

"I pull out of that light every day, and that's the first time I've ran it," said another woman.

The passenger in a silver SUV said he warned his driver.

"I said watch out for the tram or the light rail, " said the passenger.

The driver said he didn't understand the signs and was from Boise, Idaho. "It's a new thing," he said.

Metro Light Rail said drivers should get use to the tracks. The current 20-mile system will eventually extend to 57 miles.
