Bike Safety

Here’s the basics on safe biking.

Here’s the basics on safe biking. • Wear a properly fitting CPSC- or ASI-certified helmet. • Obey the same traffic laws as motorists. • Be cautious, and ride predictably and defensively. • Ride as far to the right side of the road as possible. At an intersection, select the lane furthest to the right that leads you to where you are going. • Never ride more than two abreast, and single file is safest. • Be visible. Wear colorful clothing in daytime. Use lights and reflective clothing if you must ride in darkness. • Use hand signals when changing lanes, stopping or turning. • Verbalize your intention to slow, stop, or overtake a pedestrian or another bicyclist. • Always keep one hand on the handlebars. Do not carry a passenger on your bike or a package in your hand or arms.
