Get Away to Golf and More

Both adults and kids can get into the swing of things.

When planning your summer, be sure to leave time for golf. Try an 18-hole course meandering through scenic landscapes, miniature golf with challenging obstacles, and practice ranges for sharpening your game.

How about an indoor glow-in-the-dark miniature course where monsters lurk? Would you prefer a place that offers two 18-hole courses, a market where you can buy fresh produce and cheese, and an orchard where the family can pick its own fruit? Or maybe you're interested in a driving range that offers lessons and miniature golf, plus batting cages and bumper boats. Connecticut has all of these and more.

MONSTER GOLF For a year-round Halloween-type experience, check out this indoor miniature course near the Rhode Island border. Monsters and other sorts of creepy critters glow under black lights as players work their way through the course. Monsters won’t jump out at you, so it’s not scary enough to frighten small children and weak-kneed adults. And if the golf isn't thrilling enough, there's also glow-in-the dark pool and air hockey tables, state-of-the-art arcade games, and an Internet cafe (www.monsterminigolf.com, 24 Maple Street, Danielson, 860-779-3996).

LYMAN ORCHARDS You can polish apples as well as your golf game at this family-run operation in Middlefield. Eight generations of the Lyman family, starting in 1741, have run the farm, where visitors can pick a variety of seasonal fruits, eat fresh-baked apple pie, buy cheese and produce and play on two golf courses, one designed by Gary Player, the other by Robert Trent Jones. If you're visiting in the fall, be sure to test your sense of direction in the corn maze (www.lymangolf.com, Junction of Routes 147 and 157, Middlefield, 860-349-1793).

SPORTS CENTER OF CONNECTICUT Don't worry if you show up here on a rainy or chilly day. You can still fine-tune your swing in this Shelton center's double-decker driving range that's covered, heated, and open 365 days a year. If your short game needs work, head over to the all-weather putting greens. The kids can try their hand on the 18-hole miniature course or work on a different kind of swing in one of eight heated, weather-protected batting stations. You can also play Lazer Tag in a jungle setting and, depending on the season, glide around a rink on ice skates or in-line skates (www.sportscenterct.com, 784 River Road, Shelton, 203-929-6500).

PUTTS UP DOC MINI GOLF The operators of this Norwich course say the designer had so much fun he put in a 19th hole. The course zig-zags through lush landscaping and around ponds containing more than 450,000 gallons of water. One hole stretches 108 feet, there's a 24-foot waterfall, and, if that's not enough, the course has a volcano that erupts every 20 minutes. When you've had enough golf, stop by the concession stand for a snack or take the pontoon boat across the Thames River for a meal at Americus on the Wharf (www.ameri-group.com/putts/golf.htm, One Chelsea Harbor Drive, Norwich, 860-886-7888).

CONNECTICUT GOLF LAND AND GAMES There's golf and a whole lot more at this complex in Vernon. Golfers can test their skills on a nine-hole course and they don't even have to bring their own clubs. There's also an 18-hole miniature course that's lighted for after-dinner play; a curvy, paved go-kart track; kidz karts for the tykes, and bumper boats. If the kids want to stay sharp for their Little League teams, they can step into a batting cage and swing away at baseballs or softballs. Had enough outdoor activity? There’s an indoor game room that's open year-round (www.ctgolfland.com, 95 Hartford Turnpike, Route 83, Vernon, 860-643-2654).
