Police say robber kills self after pharmacy theft

JOHNSON CITY, TN (WJHL) - Update:

Johnson City Police Department officers have identified the man who shot himself after allegedly robbing a pharmacy on West Market Street Tuesday morning.

According to a JCPD news release, Val-U-Pharmacy Discount Drug Store, 2811 W. Market St., was robbed at gunpoint around 10:45 a.m.

The man got various narcotics before leaving the store followed by the pharmacy owner, Ahmed Atyia.

Police said the robber and Atyia shot at each other.

The narcotics the man was given during the robbery have since been recovered by police.

A man, Anthony Eugene Goad, 46, of Johnson City, was stopped but was stopped several minutes later in a gray Jeep Grand Cherokee by officers at the intersection of Mayfield Drive and Blakemore Circle.

This same vehicle was also described by witnesses as being used in the robbery.

When officers approached the vehicle, Goad was seen holding a gun to his head. 

Officers tried to speak with him, but Goad shot himself in the head.

According to the release, officers removed Goad from the vehicle and performed life-saving measures on him, but were unsuccessful.

Throughout an investigation, officers found several items linking Goad to the robbery of the Val-U-Pharmacy. 

The investigation into both incidents is ongoing as facts of the cases are being presented to the First Judicial District Attorney General's Office for review.

A man suspected to have a robbed a Johnson City pharmacy Tuesday morning killed himself moments after making off with drugs.

According to Johnson City police, the man, described as white and in his 40s, entered Val-U-Pharmacy, 2811 W. Market St., around 9:42 a.m. with a handgun and demanded narcotics.

After he was given some bottles, the man left the store out the back door, where at least six shots were fired.

Police said about four to five minutes later, a patrol officer got behind the man and conducted a traffic stop at Mayfield Drive and Blakemore Circle.

The man reportedly put the handgun to his head, threatened to kill himself and then he killed himself.

Police said only one customer was inside the pharmacy during the robbery and said both the Val-U-Pharmacy and Mayfield Drive scenes are actively being investigated.

The narcotics the man was given during the robbery have since been recovered by police and the investigation is ongoing.

Val-U-Pharmacy, 2811 W. Market St., is located in the complex with other businesses, including Doctor's Care.

According to radio traffic, shots were fired.
