BUCKEYE, AZ (CBS5) -

A suspected impaired driver was arrested on four felony counts in connection with a fatal two-car collision on State Route 85 at Broadway Road in Buckeye late Sunday night.

Jose Efrain Beltran Gurrola, 21, of Buckeye, was arrested at West Valley Hospital Monday morning on the charges, according to a court document.

Gurrola is accused of driving a 2013 Dodge Ram pickup through a stop sign and striking the passenger side of a Volkswagen Beetle that killed a man in the passenger seat, an Arizona Department of Public Safety officer said in a probable cause statement.

The driver of the VW suffered cuts and abrasions.

Gurrola told an officer he had been drinking before the crash but said his girlfriend was driving the pickup, according to the statement.

But the DPS officer said Gurrola's girlfriend had bruising consistent with a passenger side seatbelt, and a man riding in the pickup told officers Gurrola was driving, according to the statement. Gurrola's girlfriend later admitted Gurrola was the driver, according to the statement.

Officers found an ignition key to the truck in Gurrola's pants.

Gurrola was booked on one felony count of reckless manslaughter and three felony counts of endangerment.

The northbound lanes were closed between Broadway Road and Southern Avenue and traffic was diverted onto Southern Avenue before the lanes reopened about 7:30 a.m. Monday, the officer said.

The southbound lanes remained open.
