Boston University Researchers Claim Coffee Consumption Can Protect Against Tooth Loss
Chula Vista, California (August 22, 2014) – A Boston University study published in the Journal of Periodontology this month found that regular coffee drinking can help adult males fight against tooth and gum disease.
“We found that coffee consumption did not have an adverse effect on periodontal health, and, instead, may have protective effects against periodontal disease,” said Nathan Ng, a graduate of the Boston University Henry M. Goldman School of Dental Medicine and lead author of the study.
Ng also said his study is “the first long-term study of its kind that has investigated the association between coffee consumption and periodontal disease in humans.”
Ng’s research team collected data from 1,152 males who participated in the US Department of Veteran Affairs’ Dental Longitudinal Study from 1968 to 1998. These participants were 98% white and non-Hispanic, ranging between the ages of 26 and 84 at the beginning of the study. The participants self-reported on their coffee consumption, while the researchers controlled gum disease risk factors such as quality of oral care and hygiene, alcohol consumption, dental cleanings, body mass index, and diabetes symptoms.
The researchers recommend further study using a more diverse population sampling.
“The results of the study certainly sound encouraging for long-time coffee drinkers who are worried about how their caffeine consumption can affect their dental health,” said Tan Garrett, spokesperson for ErskineDental.net. “When it comes to their teeth, coffee drinking should be the least of their concerns now.”
The study suggests that the caffeine and antioxidants in coffee form a sort of protection over teeth and gums. They do so by inhibiting the activity of bacteria that cause gingivitis in the mouth.
