RALEIGH, N.C. -

Many kids are ready for their big day at school, but others don't have the supplies they need.

Outreach groups, however, are looking to change that.

Earlier today, Helping Hand Mission in Raleigh handed out school supplies to children of families who have fallen on hard times.

From pencils to book bags, more than one thousand kids are now well-equipped for the school year thanks to the Mission.

"Even the schools are hit hard and the teachers are going into their pockets to buy supplies. So it's kind of on both ends so now we are just trying to reach out in order to spread the word and make sure everyone can come out on top here," said Heather Richardson, with Helping Hand Ministry.

Raleigh has seen a 97 percent growth in the poor population since the year 2000.
