Even in death Phoenix woman keeps life-saving promise to mother

It's one of the toughest decisions anyone can make. On Thursday night a Valley family said goodbye to Julia Holguin, taking the 39-year-old mother of four off life support.

In the hours leading up to her daughter's passing, Josefita Zazueta had so much she wanted to say.

"God almighty. This is one of the days I hate to be alive to have to face it. I started saying my goodbyes yesterday. I had to start yesterday," said Zazueta.

For the 59-year-old it's been a week shrouded in confusion. What was supposed to be a simple medical procedure at the OBGYN's office ended up claiming Julia Holguin's life.

"When it happened I thought, what the hell do I have to live for? Why God?" said Zazueta.

For months prior to the procedure Julia had been working hard to lose 25 pounds so that she would be a viable kidney donor for her mother who's been on dialysis for nearly two years.

"She was really committed. She would get out of work and go to the gym and constantly watch her diet," said Zazueta.

Now her selfless gift of life is something Holguin's four children need more than ever.

"I talked to my kidney doctor and he advised me, 'let's try and get the silver lining out of this dark cloud. She's going to be able to give you the kidney and you can help raise your grandkids.'"

If all goes as planned, Zazueta will be in surgery by noon on Friday.

Zazueta told CBS 5 that she had paid for all of her own funeral arrangements so her children wouldn't be burdened if something happened.

The funeral home told her she's not allowed to transfer any of that over to her daughter - leaving her family in a financial bind.

If you'd like to make a donation, an account has been set up at Arizona State Credit Union. The account number is 450206257757.
