Orange Co. votes not to add voting on Sunday, will expand hours

HILLSBOROUGH, N.C. -

The Orange County Board of Elections voted against Sunday voting at a packed meeting Tuesday, but did vote to expand hours during the week.

The meeting was held at the Board of Elections office in Hillsborough.

The meeting room was full of citizens who came to make their voices heard on the issue. Those for and against Sunday voting each had 15 minutes to express their opinions; but in the end, the board voted 2-1 against the measure.

"Additional voting days would require more cost to the taxpayers as well as staffing problems for the Board of Election people," said Mike Kuhn, who argued against the measure. "They would have to work 10 days straight."

The board did vote unanimously, however, to increase the voting hours.

"To assume all resident in Orange County all work 9 to 5 on weekdays just isn't the case in our community," said councilman Lee Storrow. "Particularly for the poorest residents."

Voting times and days have been major issues in North Carolina since new legislation changed voting laws.
