TEMPE, AZ (CBS5) -

A man who was shot after allegedly shooting at officers at a motel died Sunday afternoon, police said.

Jonathan L. Williams, 25, had been in extremely critical condition and was not expected to survive, said police spokesman Lt. Scott Smith.

The officer who fired his weapon has been placed on paid administrative leave, which is routine in these types of matters, police said.

Smith said officers were forced to shoot Williams around 6:30 p.m. Friday in the lobby of a Motel 6 near Scottsdale Road and McKellips.

He said the incident actually began Thursday night at a hotel across the street, where officers said Williams allegedly assaulted a female guest.

By the time they arrived, the suspect was gone.

But, Smith said the suspect returned to the motel Friday evening and that's when officers confronted him.

"We had intelligence from the night before that he was in possession of a firearm," Smith explained. "Today he was found in possession of a firearm. And something happened in there that our officers felt the need to open fire."

Tempe Police said Williams fired the first shots at officers, who returned gunfire.

The suspect was hit at least once.

Williams, a resident of Kansas and Florida has had prior run-ins with police in other states.
