Arpaio explains role of search warrant in Green Acres case

PHOENIX (CBS5) -

We still could be weeks away from knowing if charges will be filed in the deaths of more than 20 dogs at the Green Acres boarding facility in Gilbert. Wednesday, CBS 5 News reported on what investigators found in a search of the facility.

But what role will that search play in the overall investigation?

Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio says it could take another one to two weeks before blood and tissue sample results for the dogs are back.

"We are following the evidence that we have seized and now must put the pieces together to see if we can build a case," Arpaio explained.

But conclusions are already being made about what deputies found. For instance, the warrant says none of the dogs that were necropsied showed signs of electrocution. But Arpaio hasn't yet concluded that the A/C went out after a dog chewed through electrical wiring.

"Why would I hire a forensic expert in flow of air, air conditioning, electrical situations if we weren't leading somewhere to maybe refute whether the dogs had died as it was reported?" Arpaio asked rhetorically.

For Arpaio, details in the Green Acres warrant have uncovered a need for tougher animal cruelty laws.

"There is nothing in the laws that say that you have to be inspected, permits to operate the business, I could go on and on," he added.

Next week, he'll join state Republican Rep. Kate Brophy McGee(LD-11) to announce a push for tougher laws to try and strengthen oversight of the places we entrust with our pets.

"You need to have clear definitions of what constitutes animal cruelty and neglect," McGee said. "What can we do, what should we do so that businesses that operate badly, can't do so, or that there would be some type of licensing."
