Monsoon storms can be refreshing for the desert, bringing much needed rain as well as thunder and lightning. This second part can actually be quite scary for many pets and the Humane Society of Southern Arizona has a few tips for pet owners to remember.

The loud noises associated with monsoon storms can scare many pets, causing them to jump a fence and run far from home to get away from the noise. Some pets may also cause harm to themselves, by overreacting to the noise.

HSSA is offering the following tips for owners to ensure their pet's safety:

Keep pets indoors. For those pets especially sensitive to noise, create a 'den-like' environment by using a crate, room or walk-in closet free of windows.

Remain home with pets if possible during a storm, to provide comfort and security.

Turn on a TV to provide different sounds that will distract pets from outside noises.

Some animals that are extremely sensitive to noises may benefit from veterinarian prescribed sedatives.

Try using a 'thunder shirt' to help keep pets calm. Shirts fit snug to pets providing pressure all around and helping to minimize anxiety.

Keep a well fitted collar on pets, with an up-to-date identification tag attached to it. Make sure as well that if the pet is microchipped that information is also current.

If a pet becomes lost during a monsoon storm, call the HSSA Lost and Found Department immediately at 327-6088, ext. 111. Also contact the Pima Animal Care Center at 753-5900 to file a lost pet report. Do not forget to visit either the HSSA or PACC every other day to look for pets in person.
