PHOENIX (CBS5) -

A man crossing a Phoenix street in a wheelchair was struck and killed by a car late Monday night.

The man was crossing 32nd Street at Windsor Avenue just south of Thomas Road when a woman driving north on 32nd Street struck him, Phoenix police Sgt. Mark Schweikert said.

The driver stayed at the scene and neither impairment nor excessive speed appeared to be factors, Schweikert said.

Though there are no crosswalk markings, there is an "implied crosswalk" at any intersection, Schweikert said.

"It's legal for a person to cross there, but it has to be safe to cross," Schweikert said.

Police closed 32 Street for about six hours for the investigation.

The victim's identity was not released.

No other information was immediately available.
