NC lawmakers scaling back for July 4, budget talks

RALEIGH, N.C. -

The North Carolina General Assembly is scaling back its regular business schedule due to the July 4 holiday and the ongoing budget talks.

House Speaker Thom Tillis said late Wednesday that his chamber would meet Thursday morning to take a final vote on its coal ash cleanup bill before adjourning for the week.

But he said the House would not take votes next week and maybe longer on the floor to give budget negotiators time to work with their Senate counterparts. Tillis envisions the entire House returning for up to three days soon to pass a final budget and complete other work for the year.

The Senate already adjourned for the long weekend after its Wednesday session and didn't plan to hold a regular floor session until early next week.
