Mounds of trash, drunken fans mar Pittsburgh concert

Posted: Updated:
PITTSBURGH -

Tons of trash, empty beer bottles and drunken fans were plentiful Saturday night at the Luke Bryan concert in Pittsburgh. But the good news was, it wasn’t as bad as last year.

A Kenny Chesney concert at Heinz Field in the summer of 2013 left trash waist-high in some places, one officer told The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.

That concert left behind more than 45,000 pounds of garbage. Police arrested 73 people last year and paramedics treated 150, the newspaper reported.

That concert provoked an effort by local officials to respond on Saturday. Fans were given blue trash bags in advance, which some used.

“It’s much better organized” one woman told WPXI, the local NBC affiliate.

But trash was still plentiful, and one drunken fan keeled over and planted his face right on the street.

WPXI reported that this year, 37 people were issued non-traffic citations. One was for public intoxication, six were disorderly conduct and 10 for public urination. There were also 15 fights and more than 100 911 calls.

Many fans complained, though, about the atmosphere.

One woman said she waited “30 minutes – 30 minutes!” to use a portable restroom.

And another pointed to the beer cans, trash and bottles strewn around the parking lot as evidence that people could have behaved better.

“It makes the city look bad,” said one woman
