Mother of accused felon with viral mugshot seeks crowdfunding help

SAN FRANCISCO -  The mother of a San Joaquin County Jail inmate whose booking photo has gone viral is now launching a crowdfunding effort to get her son out of custody.

By midday Friday, Katherine Angier had raised more than $1,,000 towards her goal of $25,000 to help with the criminal defense of Jeremy Meeks.

“Please help,” Angier says in a statement on the site. “My son was taken into custody on his way to work. He is a working man with a son. He is being stereotyped due to old tatoos. (sic)”

Tens of thousands of people have viewed and shared the booking photo Stockton Police posted on their Facebook page after arresting Meeks on weapons and gang-related charges.

Angier also posted two photos of her son with her grandson. She says she thinks people have already decided her son is in a gang because of his body art but she insists he is married and has a good job.

Stockton police say they arrested Meeks as part of Operation Ceasefire. They say he was identified after a review of a series of shootings reported a new “active group” in the Weston Ranch Area.

Three other people, presumably less visually appealing, were also arrested in the crackdown.
