MESA, AZ (CBS5) -

The driver of a passenger car was killed when the vehicle left an East Valley freeway and collided head-on with the concrete wall of an overpass in Mesa.

The driver was going south on the Loop 202 Red Mountain Freeway about 5:10 a.m. when the white Hyundai Sonata left the road, went up a steep embankment and hit the wall of the Broadway Road overpass, said Raul Garcia of the Arizona State Department of Public Safety.

The driver was the only person in the car and was dead at the scene, Garcia said.

Investigators said the southbound lanes curve to the east at the overpass, but were still trying to determine what caused the car to leave the road, Garcia said.

No other information was immediately available.
