BAGHDAD, IRAQ (CNN) - The U.S. embassy in Baghdad has bolstered security as Islamist insurgents overrun parts of Iraq.

The Pentagon confirmed the U.S. military is providing increased assistance at diplomatic facilities in Iraq's capital.

The move comes after a request from the state department, according to Pentagon Press Secretary Rear Adm. John Kirby.

Some embassy personnel are also temporarily relocating to other locations as the violence moves closer to Baghdad.

The attacking militants are part of the group known as ISIS, an al-Qaida splinter group.

It's trying to establish an Islamic state in the region that would stretch from Iraq into northern Syria.
