RALEIGH, N.C. -

Construction of the Lincoln Apartment Complex has begun in downtown Raleigh near Moore Square. Raleigh Mayor Nancy McFarlane, Council member Eugene Weeks and the investors attended the groundbreaking.

Real Estate Director Gordon Smith named the complex in honor of the historically black neighborhood.

"It's why I decided the name for this project needed to be The Lincoln, because he was the great emancipator and is in a way for each of us even today," Smith said.

The $35 million apartment complex is located south of Hargett Street and will house 224 apartments. Construction is projected to finish next year.
