Officials picked former Avondale Mayor Marie Lopez Rogers to fill a vacancy on the Maricopa County Board of Supervisors that was created by the resignation of Supervisor Mary Rose Wilcox.

Rogers was chosen Wednesday to fill the position on an interim basis until a permanent replacement is elected by voters in the fall.

The Board of Supervisors also had considered former Phoenix City Council member Michael Johnson, Phoenix attorney Otilia Diaz and former Arizona Corporation Commission policy adviser Cristina Arzaga-Williams for the appointment.

Rogers represents the county district that includes south Phoenix, Buckeye, the Gila River Indian Community and Gila Bend.

Late last month, Wilcox resigned from the county post that she has held since 1993 to run for a congressional seat.
