Boaters on Lake Pleasant Monday will be under the watchful eyes of Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio's DUI chain gang.

They'll be telling boaters not to drink and operate a boat under the influence of drugs.

Arpaio has ordered his female DUI chain gang to clean up the park with a slogan on their shirts that says, "The D.U.I. Chain Gang, Clean (ing) and Sober."

Most of the chain gang prisoners will be cleaning up after partygoers expected at the lake this weekend. A couple of inmates will carry large signs to remind boaters not to drink and operate a boat in an effort to reduce the number of "perating under the Influence arrests this year.

"The DUI chain gang will remind everyone at the lake to not drink and drown," Arpaio said.

Last year alone, the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office arrested more than 909 people on charges of misdemeanor DUI, 1,367 people for underage consumption/possession, 83 people for felony DUI and 128 people for OUI.

"With all the carnage on the roadways involving alcohol-related accidents, my hope is judges will begin giving the maximum sentence to inmates convicted of driving under the influence," Arpaio said.

Arpaio started the male chain gang in 1995, and the only female chain gang in the entire nation followed a short time later.
