SUN CITY, AZ (CBS5) -

A Sun City husband and wife and a longtime family cat were safe after a fire destroyed both their vehicles and slightly damaged their home early Thursday morning.

Patricia Ann Hatcher-Depottey said she was sleeping on the couch with her 23-year-old cat Patches when she was awakened just before 2 a.m. by "a pop" that sounded like a bird hitting a window.

"But it was too late for a bird," she said.

She said she got up, saw the front window a bright red and opened the front door to find flames engulfing the family cars in the driveway of the home in the area of 107th and Alabama avenues.

"I got my husband, who was in the bedroom asleep, and called 911 and then got my husband and cat out the door," Hatcher-Depottey said, adding she was thankful no one was hurt.

She said her cat is almost blind and after waking her husband retrieved the cat who was standing in the kitchen.

Hatcher-Depottey said both cars were destroyed, and that damage to the house was minimal, relegated mostly to the garage door and eaves. She said they would stay with her daughter who lives nearby.

The cause of the fire had not been determined and the investigation was continuing.
