A historic gift of $19 million was made to the St. Joseph's Foundation from longtime Arizona philanthropists John and Doris Norton.

Norton's historic donation is the largest ever made in the state of Arizona. It will be used to create one of the nation's top centers for lung, heart and esophageal medicine at Dignity Health's St. Joseph's Hospital and Medical Center. A primary focus of research will be organ rejection, specifically lung transplant rejection, in the new John and Doris Norton Thoracic Institute.

In addition, esophageal cancer research will be a focal point for researchers and doctors. Esophageal cancer has increased sevenfold in the last three decades.

Norton's gift will also go to lung cancer research along with what new cardiac services and medical education programs are available. St. Joseph's expects to triple their thoracic clinical and research staff.

Several different areas of the hospital are set to receive portions of the donation including:

  • Recruitment of national heart and lung specialists
  • Addition of needed cardiac services, such as a heart-failure program
  • Recruitment of nationally known scientists
  • Creation of publications division to disseminate research findings internationally
  • Development of telemedicine program connecting St. Joseph's experts to rural doctors

"Through this gift, the people of Arizona, and patients from around the western United States, will be able to obtain cutting edge care for esophageal, lung and heart diseases", said Ross Bremner, MD, director of the institute. The leaders at St. Joseph's are hoping that the $19 million gift will help the new John and Doris Norton Thoracic Institute become as nationally respected as the Barrow Neurological Institute.
