PHOENIX (CBS5) -

Phoenix police are investigating an incident alleged street racing that killed a man only yet identified as a man in his 20s.

It happened near 48th Street and Broadway Friday around 9:30 p.m.

Sgt. Trent Crump said witnesses reported seeing a red Chevy Camaro and a dark colored Ford Mustang street racing at speeds estimated by those bystanders to be in excess of 100 mph.

As the vehicles approached the intersection of 48th Street, the Camaro lost control for an unknown reason; left the center where it collided with a silver BMW that was driving westbound through the intersection.

The BMW impacted the passenger door of the Camaro then rotated and collided, head-on, with a Chrysler 300, which was also westbound on Broadway.

The driver of the Camaro suffered critical injuries and was taken to the hospital where he later died.

All occupants of the other vehicles suffered injuries and are expected to be OK.

Crump is asking who knows anything about that dark-colored Mustang that fled the scene without stopping to call police.
