FLORENCE, AZ (CBS5) -

An effort to help a stranded motorist led Pinal County deputies to a convicted sex offender who was living at different addresses without registering them with the state.

A Pinal County deputy on patrol near Oracle stopped to help the motorist identified as 28-year-old Michael Thomas Harrison on Feb. 28, according to a sheriff's office news release.

A background check revealed Harrison is a high-risk registered sex offender in Arizona after he was convicted of attempted sexual assault of an 88-year-old woman in Pima County in 1999, according to the release.

Harrison was registered as living in the San Manuel area, but told the deputy he had been living near Marana for two days, according to the release.

Harrison was released but the deputy contacted the PCSO Sex Offender Registration and Tracking unit, which began in investigation, according to the release.

Detectives learned Harrison had not lived at his registered address for several months and had lived at different addresses in Marana for several months and Tucson without registering. The investigation also unveiled that he might be in possession of drugs and a handgun, although he is a prohibited possessor, according to the release.

Detectives and members of the U.S. Marshal's Service arrested Harrison as he was leaving his Tucson apartment on May 1, according to the release.

Harrison admitted knowing he was required to register and that he had not registered in Pima County, according to the release.

He was booked into the Pima County Jail on charges of failure to register as a sex offender in both Pinal and Pima counties.
