TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

The National Museum of The Great Lakes welcomed the public for the first time on Saturday to its picturesque location on Front Street in east Toledo.

Visitors to the museum can learn about everything from the United States' victory in the Battle of Lake Erie to the sinking of the Edmund Fitzgerald freighter.

Tales that span hundreds of years are told about fur traders, rum runners and the Underground Railroad.

The museum includes hundreds of artifacts and over 40 interactive displays. The Col. James M. Schoonmaker Museum Ship (formerly the Willis B. Boyer) is also docked at the museum.

The museum is operated by the Great Lakes Historical Society and is open Tuesday through Saturday from 10am to 5pm and Sunday from 12pm to 5pm.

The museum is closed on Mondays.
