Phoenix VA scandal: Where can vets turn for help?

Posted: Updated:
PHOENIX (CBS5) -

One of our U.S. Senators said flat out: Veterans shouldn't rely on the VA in Phoenix for help with long wait times for medical care.

CBS 5 News put in 2 phone calls Friday morning and additional calls to the VA Friday afternoon, but never heard back.

Just since our reports Thursday night on long waits for medical help at the VA, we received 13 emails from concerned vets.

One email from a family member was about a veteran "suffering from a blood clot to the spleen" who's "missing out on adequate care" because of "atrocious wait times."

"This is the first time there has been allegations of 40 people actually dying that has made this issue far, far more serious, even though it was serious before," explained Sen. John McCain.

He made the comments on the Phoenix VA scandal following an event at the Sheraton Downtown Phoenix hosted by the Arizona Chamber of Commerce.

With allegations of extreme delays in care and false record keeping at the VA, McCain says those wondering where to turn probably shouldn't depend on the VA.

"No, they cannot get it there," McCain said.

When we asked him what does he want people to do, he said, "Come to our office. We have helped thousands veterans over the years. Eighty percent of the cases we do are with veterans," McCain explained.

We also asked Sen. Jeff Flake what he's telling family members. He echoed McCain's statement, encouraging frustrated vets to contact his office.

"We have case workers assigned to that already," Flake added.

Both of them clarified that it's not uncommon for legislative district offices to have to fill-in where state agencies may leave off.

"It happens with a lot of agencies of government. It isn't just the VA that people have a great deal of difficulty with," McCain said.

We put together a list of the best phone numbers and contacts for vets and their families who are having trouble with the Phoenix VA.
