SPRINGFIELD, MA (WSHM) -

The Springfield Police Homicide Unit began investigating a death that occurred March 22 after authorities found a 61-year-old man dead in his Temple Street apartment.

This was Springfield's second murder of 2014.

According to Springfield police officials, the victim, identified as Craig Sheridan, was dead for nearly a week before his body was discovered. His body was found inside apartment number 603 at 5 Temple St., police said.

Neighbors initially alerted police of a strange odor coming from the apartment after Sheridan had not been seen in a week, according to Springfield Police Sgt. John Delaney.

The Springfield Police Department Homicide Unit conducted an extensive investigation after the Springfield medical examiner ruled the death a homicide.

Police charged Diomaris Valentin, 28, of 97 Tinkham Rd., Springfield, with murder on Wednesday at 2 p.m. following an investigation. She will be held overnight in police headquarters pending her arraignment Thursday in Springfield District Court.
