Grand Canyon's No. 1 pair of Mackenzie Phelps and Kelli Dallmann finished runner-up in the Silver Division at the Fiesta on Siesta Key sand volleyball pairs tournament Sunday.
Phelps/Dallmann won three matches, including one over GCU's No. 2 pair of Shannon Dugan and Megan Glennie, before falling to LSU's Meghan Mannari/Katie Lindelow in three sets, 23-21, 18-21, 15-12 in the final.
"Kenzie and Kelli did a great job," said coach Kris Naber. "That was also the best Shannon and Megan had played against them. They really gave them a challenge."
Teams were separated into different divisions after Saturday's pool play. Sunday's matches marked the fourth straight day of competition for Grand Canyon during its Florida road trip. The trip started Thursday with a dual victory over Florida Gulf Coast. The team was defeated by No. 6 Florida International Friday. All six GCU pairs competed in pool and tournament competition Saturday. GCU's No. 5 pair, Britta Forsythe and Brandy Grant finished runners-up in the Copper Bracket.
"One of our goals coming in was to make a name for Grand Canyon, being the only west coast school," said Naber. "Leaving today, I think we did. How we represented the school and ourselves, I couldn't be more proud of our girls and how the others are going to remember Grand Canyon.
"It was a great weekend and a great experience."
The trip ends Monday with a 7 a.m. (Arizona Time) dual against Webber International in Babson Park, Fla.
