PHOENIX (CBS5) -

A Phoenix couple was booked into the Maricopa County Jail on Saturday on multiple counts of child abuse after their 1-year-old daughter was found with numerous bite marks and injuries.

Sandy Yesenia Aranda and Abiezer Neftali Zuniga, both 18, were arrested after Aranda's parents called police because they hadn't seen their granddaughter for a while, according to a police officer's probable cause statement.

Police said they found the child's injuries severe enough that paramedics were called to treat her.

Aranda said her husband had begun abusing the child in February, pulling the child into a bedroom, shutting the door and then pulling out hair and biting her, according to the statement.

She said that while she was aware of the abuse, she didn't want her daughter growing up without her father and feared retribution because she struck Zuniga with a bottle, according to the statement.

Zuniga told officers that he was mad at the child because of her crying and would pull out her hair, bite her and slapped her across the mouth, according to the statement.
