Arizona women's golf picked up its third top-five finish of the 2013-14 season on Sunday with a fifth-place showing at the PING/ASU Invitational. Held at ASU Karsten Golf Course (par 72, 6,223 yards) in Tempe, Ariz., competition took place Fri.-Sun., April 4-6.
No. 7 South Carolina won the team title with an 853 (-11). No. 11 Washington, No. 3 Duke and No. 6 Arizona State shared the runner-up finish with scores of 859 (-5). No. 9 Arizona finished fifth with a score of 868 (+4) and rounds of 288 (E), 288 (E) and 292 (+4). The Cats finished ahead of seven teams ranked in the top 40, including No. 2 UCLA (sixth), No. 8 Stanford (seventh) and No. 5 Oklahoma (T11th). No. 7 Celine Boutier of Duke won the individual medal with a 208 (-8).
No. 36 freshman Wanasa Zhou was Arizona's top finisher for the third time this season and for the first time in the spring portion of the schedule. She earned an eighth-place finish with rounds of 69, 73 and 72 for a combined score of 214 (-2). Today's top-10 finish is Zhou's second of the season and her fourth top-20 finish in 2013-14. No. 16 sophomore Lindsay Weaver finished in a five-way tie for 27th place. She carded rounds of 72, 76 and 71 for a score of 219 (+3). She added two more rounds at or below par to bring her total to nine on the season.
No. 81 freshman Jessica Vasilic and junior Andrea Vilarasau shared a three-way tie for 37th place. Vasilic shot rounds of 71, 75 and 76 for a total of 222 (+6). Vilarasau collected rounds of 80, 69 and 73, including her hole-in-one on No. 7 on Saturday, for a combined score of 222 (+6). Junior Manon Gidali rounded out the Arizona five in a seven-way tie for 40th place. She carded a 223 (+7) with rounds of 76, 71 and 76.
The Wildcats will compete next at the Silverado Showdown, April 14-15, in Napa, Calif.
