U.S. Rep. Ed Pastor, D-AZ, is endorsing a Maricopa County supervisor to succeed him when he retires from representing the state's 7th Congressional District.
Pastor publicly endorsed Democrat Mary Rose Wilcox on Monday.
Pastor announced in February his retirement at the end of his current term.
Wilcox is serving her fifth, four-year term on the county Board of Supervisors and previously served on the Phoenix City Council for nine years.
"I am confident that her 31 years of hard work and experience of public service serving her community and her constituents has prepared her well to represent all Arizonans in Congress," Pastor said.
Others expected to run in the Democratic primary for the congressional seat include state Sen. Steve Gallardo and former state Rep. Ruben Gallego.
Pastor's Phoenix-area district is heavily Democratic and whoever wins the August primary is expected to easily win November's general election.
