SCOTTSDALE, AZ (CBS5) -

The Arizona Diamondbacks' veteran Brandon McCarthy will start the team's home opener Monday against the San Francisco Giants at Chase Field.

McCarthy will face off against Giants' left-hander Madison Bumgarner. Game time is 6:40 p.m.

The Giants and D-backs meet on Opening Day for only the second time, but it's the second time in three years, the Diamondbacks' website noted. Arizona took a 5-4 victory over San Francisco at Chase Field to start the 2012 season.

The Diamondbacks have used the past several days to try to shore up problem areas after a long journey to Australia and two losses to the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Manager Kirk Gibson hobbled into his pre-game news conference on crutches Wednesday after undergoing surgery to repair a torn meniscus in his left knee.

Gibson said it's something that needed to be taken care of rather than endure that kind of pain for the entire season.

There was more unsettling news. Reliever David Hernandez has a damaged ligament in his right elbow, an injury that could result in season-ending surgery.

The team said an MRI on Thursday showed a damaged ulnar collateral ligament and that Hernandez will get a second opinion.

The right-hander is an important part of the Arizona reliever corps, usually in the setup role. He had an off year last season, going 5-6 in 62 appearances with a 4.48 ERA and two saves in eight tries. In 2012, Hernandez was 2-3 with a 2.50 ERA in 72 appearances.

The Diamondbacks already lost All-Star Patrick Corbin for the season. He underwent surgery to repair a partially torn ulnar collateral ligament.

The CBS 5 Start Smart crew will be live at Chase Field Monday for a preview of the home opener. Look for coverage starting at 4:30 a.m.
