Suspect sought in Tempe sexual assault

TEMPE, AZ (CBS5) -

Police are on the hunt for the man who allegedly sexually assaulted a woman in her Tempe home early Thursday morning while she was sleeping.

The victim reported she was asleep in the bedroom of her apartment in the 100 block of W. Fifth St. when she woke up to a man sexually assaulting her.

"We don't know who this guy is, we don't know what he was doing," said Sgt. Mike Pooley with the Tempe Police Department. "What we know is he was in this apartment of somebody he has no idea who they are."

She confronted the unknown suspect and was able to chase him out of the apartment. Her roommate was home at the time but did not see the suspect. It's unclear how he got in the apartment.

The victim described him as a 6-foot Caucasian man with a heavy build and short brown hair.

He was last seen wearing eyeglasses, a black shirt and black pants.

Police believe the man got in through an unlocked front door. They said now is a good reminder to never leave your home unsecured.

"It's important that we remember to lock them, that these give these criminals the opportunity to do things like this," Pooley said.

"I find it pretty shocking here, actually," said nearby resident Andy Stemple. "There are quite a few weirdos walking around. You have to be careful."

"It's not OK, because I am young and I am a young lady. It's not OK," said Brianda Zambrano.

Anyone with information call Tempe Police Department at 480-858-6087.
