GLENDALE, AZ (CBS5) -

Access to and from the West Valley's largest entertainment and sports districts will be easier when new HOV-lane ramps open late Friday night in Glendale.

The ramps at the Maryland Avenue bridge off the Loop 101 freeway are expected to open before midnight Friday, said Doug Nitzel of the Arizona Department of Transportation.

The new ramps are the result of a cooperative effort that includes the city of Glendale, ADOT and the Maricopa Association of Governments, Nitzel said.

The $17 million project that began in October will improve access in and out of the Westgate Entertainment District, University of Phoenix Stadium and Jobing.com Arena, Nitzel said.

Nitzel said an accelerated construction schedule allowed crews to easily meet the goal of completing the ramps before the Arizona Cardinals 2014 season begins.

A ribbon-cutting was scheduled at the Maryland Avenue bridge over Loop 101 at 2 p.m. Friday and crews will then begin removing the last of the barricades.
