TUCSON, AZ (CBS5) -

Border patrol agents heard cries for help while on patrol near Topawa, AZ, Monday night, leading them to a man trapped in a well.

The agents and an EMT were able to extricate the illegal immigrant from the dry well in the desert and he did not appear to be injured, according to U.S. Customs and Border Protection.

The man from Guatemala said he was forced into the well by two drug smugglers with weapons after he refused to carry narcotics with him into the U.S.

The night before, in an unrelated case, border patrol agents found a mother and her two young boys abandoned in the desert near Covered Wells, AZ. The family reported their smuggler left them three days earlier.

They were taken by medical helicopter to a hospital and treated for dehydration.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection said all these people in the U.S. illegally will be processed and removed.
