PHOENIX (CBS5) -

A former Phoenix criminal defense attorney will be spending the next three years behind bars.

Carmen Lynn Fischer Garcia was also sentenced March 17 to four years of supervised probation after a plea agreement in which she pleaded guilty to one count of attempted money laundering and one count of assisting a criminal street gang.

Garcia originally faced 47 counts related to organized crime and money laundering, among others, before the plea deal in February, said Jim Knupp of the Pinal County Attorney's Office.

Garcia admitted that she assisted her husband, Angel Garcia, from December 2007 to July 2013 by passing information relevant to his involvement with a criminal organization and that she assisted with the movement of money and other valuables for inmates in state and federal prison.

She also admitted knowing her husband was an active member of a gang and that she assisted with gang activity by passing on information and money at his direction.

She had also served as her husband's defense attorney.

According to the plea agreement, Carmen Garcia's probation will include gang terms, which are established by the probation officer. Those terms typically include not associating with or being seen with documented gang members or gang associates and not communicating with them through any method, Knupp said.

"For over four years, Fischer acted as a conduit of information for a gang and funneled money to and for inmates in Pinal County," said Pinal County Attorney Lando Voyles. "No more. Fischer now joins those she seemed intent on serving, illegally."
