GLENDALE, AZ (CBS5) -

The Glendale Fire Department honored the oldest living Glendale volunteer firefighter who turned 90 on Sunday.

Fire units pulled up with lights and sirens running and greeted Charlie Bootz at his daughter's home.

Bootz received a plaque from City Councilman Ian Hugh, Assistant fire Chief Elio Pompa and former Glendale fire Chief Gary Crabtree.

"It's changed a lot," he said. "We had three fire trucks in 1959. The town of Glendale was just a mile square. We had a siren in back of city hall. You ring it and if the wind was blowing right, you could hear it."

The Glendale Fire Department began in 1912,  the same year Arizona celebrated its statehood.

The all-volunteer department served the growing community through the Great Depression and the start of World War II.

The city hired its first full-time paid fire chief in the 1950s. A decade later, Glendale was able to show the need to employ its first full-time paid firefighters.

Volunteers still play an important role within the department. More than 100 of them give their time as safety educators, administration support and fire cadets.

The Crisis Response Team is made up of volunteers trained by the Glendale Fire Department and Maricopa Association Governments to assist firefighters, police officers and the citizens of the west Valley during 911 calls.
