Arizona Senate to propose $9.2 billion budget

Posted: Updated:
PHOENIX (AP) -

Arizona Senate President Andy Biggs says he plans to introduce a $9.2 billion spending plan that trims about $150 million from Gov. Jan Brewer's proposal.

Biggs said Monday that the plan will trim some money from the governor's proposal to set up a new state child welfare agency. Also being trimmed is her proposed $50 million deposit into the state's rainy day fund.

But Biggs plans to add money for highways, a major priority of many in the Legislature that Brewer left out of her budget.

The Senate proposal will serve as that chamber's starting point for negotiations with Brewer. A House version hasn't been unveiled.

Biggs says despite the cuts his plan meets all the fundamental issues and priorities in Brewer's spending plan.
