PHOENIX (CBS5) -

The number of flu cases reported to the Arizona Department of Health Services remained elevated in the past week.

Preliminary numbers indicated 497 laboratory-confirmed cases of influenza were documented between March 2 to March 8 from 13 counties.

So far this season, 8,737 cases have been reported, with laboratory-confirmed cases identified in 15 counties.

Of those, 7,990 or 91 percent are influenza A, 602 or 7 percent are influenza B and 145 or 2 percent are of unknown type.

State health officials said there has been one influenza-associated pediatric death and that was in Yuma County.

The cases included in the latest report represent a small proportion of the true number of cases of influenza, according to state health officials.
