Eight Wildcats to compete at NCAA Indoor Championships

The University of Arizona Wildcat No. 6 men's and women's track and field teams will have a total of eight student-athletes compete at the NCAA Indoor Championships on March 14-15. Three competitors will represent the women's team while the men will have five competitors in Albuquerque, N.M.

On the men's side, senior Lawi Lalang will compete in the mile, 3K and 5K. The mile has a preliminary round so he could potentially run four races in two days. On Friday, he will compete in the preliminary round of the mile at 6 p.m. MST He will return to the track at 8:45 p.m. to run the final of the 5,000-meter race. On Saturday, he would run the final of men's mile at 6 p.m., if he advances. His final event on the track would be the 3,000-meter race at 7:55 p.m. Lalang is currently ranked No. 1 in the country for the mile and 3K. He is ranked No. 4 for the 5K. Senior Nick Ross will compete in the men's high jump competition at 4 p.m. on Friday. Ross has been ranked No. 1 in the high jump since the conclusion of the Wildcats' first meet in Flagstaff on January 17. Junior Jovon Cunningham will triple jump for the Wildcats at 6 p.m. on Saturday and he is currently ranked No. 13 on the list of entries. Cunningham's personal-best mark of 52-2.5 (15.91m) is just off the school-record mark of 15.94m. Freshman Jordan Young will compete in the weight throw in Albuquerque at 4 p.m. on Friday. He is the school-record holder in the event is ranked seventh among those entered in the event. Junior Pau Tonnesen will compete in the heptathlon and is ranked 15th on the list of entries. He will begin Friday's competition at 10 a.m. and Saturday's at 11 a.m.

Also, the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches' Association (USTFCCCA) released the pre-NCAA Championships edition of The Bowerman Watch List on Wednesday. Ross and Lalang were both on the list once again. It marks Lalang's 19th time as a member, tying Florida's Jeff Demps for the most by a man since the Watch List's inception in 2010.

On the women's side, senior Shapri Romero will represent Arizona in the 400-meter race. She is ranked No. 15 on the list of accepted entries. Romero will look to earn the first individual All-America honors of her career at Arizona. She will run in the preliminary round at 7:10 p.m. on Friday and the final is set for 6:50 p.m. on Saturday. Sophomore Nnenya Hailey is running the preliminary round of the 60-meter hurdles on Friday at 6:45 p.m. The final is set for 6:30 p.m. on Saturday. Hailey, the transfer from Clemson, has a personal-best time of 8.21 and is just off the school-record time of 8.17. Senior Alyssa Hasslen is the No. 5 ranked shot putter on the entries list. She will compete on Saturday at 6 p.m. and will look to earn first-team NCAA Indoor All-America honors for the second-straight year.
