PHOENIX (CBS5/AP) -
A 70-day streak without any precipitation in the Phoenix area has finally been broken.
Residents of Phoenix and its surrounding suburbs were greeted Saturday morning by gray skies and showers. Rain grew heavier by late afternoon.
At around 5:30 p.m. Saturday, steady, heavier rains were reported across the Valley, accompanied by some lightning and thunder in the Laveen area.
Here are some rain totals at 6 p.m.
1.02 inches - Tempe
1.02 inches - Sun City
0.75 inches - Scottsdale
0.75 inches - Cave Creek
0.59 inches - Fountain Hills
0.43 inches - Mesa
0.20 inches - Gilbert
CBS 5 meteorologists said a storm system originally expected to bring rain by Friday evening started just after midnight.
The storm left behind quite the mess in Mesa near Alma School and Main. Large trees were uprooted and shingles were ripped from roof tops. Residents said they were surprised to see all this damage.
"Thirty seconds of wind can really destroy a lot of things, but life goes on," said Daniel Rhodes.
At 7 p.m. about 2,050 Arizona Public Service customers were without power due to the storm. The boundaries of the outage ran from Camelback south to Osborn and 24th Street west to 12th St.
The Arizona Department of Transportation said on State Route 89A about 12 miles north of Sedona, a rockfall is blocking travel lanes near milepost 387.
The Pacific storm, driven by an upper-level low, continued to march across Arizona with conditions expected to dry out Sunday.
The weather has put a damper on several planned weekend events throughout Phoenix.
Officials canceled the fourth annual Downtown Phoenix Mardi Gras parade scheduled for 4 p.m.
But a marathon race through Mesa, Phoenix and Tempe ran as scheduled.
"A few leftover showers will be possible early Sunday morning. Otherwise, expect drier conditions and at least partial clearing by midday Sunday," said CBS 5 meteorologist Jason Kadah.
It should be dry for the big race at P.I.R. on Sunday afternoon, Kadah said.
Periods of wet snow showers will continue over the high country and White Mountains through Sunday afternoon.
Warmer weather returns by Monday.
In California, a storm that brought some of the highest rainfall totals to the Los Angeles area in years, including 8 inches on some mountains, was just the beginning of what the region needs to pull out of a major drought.
About 13 homes were evacuated Friday night in Palmdale in northern Los Angeles County, where a mudslide closed a major road.
Thunder echoed and hard rain fell late Friday night on Hollywood, which was abuzz with preparations for Sunday evening's Academy Awards and hopes the rain will have moved on by then as expected.
Rainfall totals in parts of California were impressive, especially in areas that typically don't receive much, but not nearly enough to offer long-term relief from a long-running drought.
Three inches fell on Bel Air and Pasadena, and an urban flash-flood warning that was sent to cell phones was called late Friday night for central Los Angeles County.
For the first time in nearly three years, downtown Los Angeles received more than 2 inches - doubling its total for the rainy season that began in July, the National Weather Service said. Yet the city remained 7 inches below the normal 11 inches.
