PHOENIX (CBS5/AP) -

A 3-year-old boy drowned in a backyard swimming pool Sunday, Phoenix firefighters said.

Authorities said family members at a home near 64th Street and Camelback Road discovered the child in the pool Sunday morning.

A family member performed CPR until emergency responders arrived. Paramedics said the boy did not have a pulse and was not breathing.

Capt. Jonathan Jacobson said he was then taken to a pediatric emergency facility, where he was pronounced dead.

He said there was no pool fence.

Jacobson said this is the first drowning incident this year involving a child under the age of 5.

"These are children that don't have the ability to learn how to swim," Jacobson said. "They get in there, they struggle and drown."

The family was in Phoenix visiting the other family and had stayed the night at the home, Jacobs said.
