LAS VEGAS (FOX5) -

A former felon who police say confessed to strangling and then burying his landlord in the desert made his first appearance in Las Vegas Justice Court on Friday after his arrest.

Edward Kopp, 52, was booked into Clark County Detention Center on Feb. 18 on a charge of open murder tied to the death of 53-year-old Sheila Linke.

A judge set a preliminary hearing for Kopp for March 27.

According to an arrest report, Kopp told detectives Linke, who were roommates, were in a confrontation on Jan. 26 over an eviction.

Kopp claimed Linke had a knife in her hand during the confrontation which led to him kicking the woman, holding her down on the ground and strangling her with his hands, a nylon rope and a plastic bag, according to documents.

Kopp then told investigators he loaded Linke's body to his pickup truck bed with the help of his girlfriend and drove out to a desert area near White Hills, AZ, according to police. There, the couple buried Linke's body, police said.

Las Vegas Metro police originally considered Linke a missing person after friends and her work supervisor saw she was not home in the days following Jan. 26.

Lt. Ray Steiber of Metro's Homicide Section stated there was no probable cause currently to arrest Kopp's girlfriend, Kathy Atteberry, as part of the case.

Local attorney Lloyd Baker, who is not involved in the case, observed, though, charges may still come for Atteberry.

"It's still definitely a crime to participate in hiding up a crime," Baker said.

Baker also observed Atteberry was unlikely coerced or under threat to participate in the act, noting the fact she and Kopp were seen at a bar about the time before Linke's reported burial.

Kopp was being held at CCDC without bail. Calls to Atteberry's attorney for comment were not returned as of Thursday night.
