Extreme drought returns to Arizona

Posted: Updated:

Extreme drought returns to parts of Arizona after over nearly two months of dry conditions for much of the state.

The U.S. Drought Monitor update is released each Thursday morning.

According to the U.S. Drought Monitor the conditions each week are "based on measurements of climatic, hydrologic and soil conditions as well as reported impacts and observations from more than 350 contributors around the country."

The latest Arizona update is below.

Note the color red covering parts of Pima, Cochise, Graham, Pinal, and Gila counties.

That red color shows Extreme drought conditions and is new to the map this week.

Extreme drought was last on the Arizona map in September 2013, which is also the last month Exceptional drought conditions covered part of the state.

Plus, since the start of 2014, drought conditions cover over 23 percent more of the state.
