Durham police charged a man in connection with the shooting of a 5-month-old girl in the 400 block of Macon Street Wednesday morning.

Police charged Arin Tavon Futrell, 21, with felony negligent child abuse resulting in bodily injury. He was also arrested on outstanding warrants charging him with attempted breaking and entering and conspiracy to commit breaking and entering, according to police.

Police confirmed Futrell is not the father of the injured baby.

Officers with the Durham Police Department responded to a shooting call shortly after 7:30 a.m.

Officers discovered that a baby had been shot and was suffering from a gunshot wound to her hand and leg.

Police said the baby is being treated for non-life threatening injuries at Duke Hospital.

"This happened three doors down, as you can see, so to live here in this area and been here only four months and a baby get shot, and we just had a newborn, is very uncomfortable," said neighbor Quintarius Justice. "You can imagine how I feel."

Investigators said the shooting appears to have been an accident. The baby was shot while on a porch outside a house.

Durham police said a firearm was recovered during the investigation and that Futrell had a gun in the pocket of his hoodie when the incident occurred.
