The Grand Canyon University men's and women's track and field teams returned to action Friday, competing in day one of the Don Kirby Invitational in Albuquerque, N.M. The invitational, which features athletes from several of the top caliber schools in the country, is being hosted inside the Albuquerque Convention Center. This is the largest meet that the Antelopes will compete in during the indoor season, as 29 schools have traveled to Albuquerque for the weekend. Of the 29 schools, six of the women's teams and seven of the men's teams are nationally ranked in the latest USTFCCCA Top 25 Poll.
In the men's events, Tyler Vandyke continued to have success in the distance events, as he garnered a second-place finish in the 3000-meter run, recording a time of 8:41.45. Teammate Brandon Kocmoud placed eighth in the same event, finishing with a time of 8:58.70.
Lance Parker ran a season-best time in the 200-meter dash, finishing 13th with a time of 21.51 seconds. His time is the second-best this season in the WAC in the 200-meter dash.
AAron Hill took home sixth in the long jump, recording a mark of 7.17 meters. Kevin Lashley and Marcus Flannigan finished seventh and eighth, respectively. Flannigan owns the second-best leap in the WAC in the long jump this season and Lashley is third on the list.
Daniel Zupeuc, who holds the second-best mark in the WAC in the pole vault, finished eighth in the event.
On the women's side of the 200-meter dash, Samantha Bogatz also clocked a season-best time and 13th place finish, recording a time of 24.27 seconds. Bogatz holds the second-fastest time in the WAC in the 200-meter dash behind teammate Shavine Hodges.
In the women's 600-meter run, Amanda Sims took home a fifth-place finish after crossing the finish line with a time of 1:36.18 and shattering the previous school record of 1:39.94.
Vanessa Levy had her strongest performance of the season in the weight throw, recording a toss of 17.83 meters. Levy is second on the list of top performers in the WAC in the weight throw. Her heave also breaks the school record in the event, which she previously set this season.
