GILBERT, AZ (CBS5) -

Tears filled Jena Rindon's eyes as she thought about her friend, Jason Nelson, and his wife, Tammy Yohe.

In the past 48 hours, Nelson has endured two surgeries in an effort to save his arms. He remains in a medically induced coma.

"He's bandaged like a mummy from head to toe and just unrecognizable," Rindon said.

Rindon told CBS 5 News on Sunday that Nelson got a call from the tenant at his rental property near the intersection of Warner and Val Vista roads to investigate a strange odor. Investigators said there was an explosion after he lit a cigarette in the garage.

"He is a super handy guy," Rindon said. "He went and fixed everything himself. I don't know what happened. What I do know is the house didn't have gas."

In fact, Southwest Gas officials confirmed none of the homes in the neighborhood are hooked up to gas. However, there were lines near the property that weren't marked.

Since the explosion, Rindon has set up a website for donations on GoFundMe.com. Thousands of dollars in donations are already pouring in along with words of encouragement for the family.

"Tammy called me this morning just balling her eyes out, saying the only reason why she's making it through is because she's reading these people's comments," Rindon said.
